Battery watering and battery access are common questions for electric reach truck teams. The instruction card below shows the procedure used for the Toyota reach truck pictured.
Water top-up applies only to conventional flooded lead-acid batteries where the battery manufacturer specifies it. Sealed and lithium-ion batteries require different care.
Confirm the correct battery and procedure first
Confirm that the truck has the same battery-access arrangement as the one illustrated. Do not copy a key, latch or mast-control sequence from another model simply because the truck looks similar.
Use the exact truck manual, site procedure and operator training for the individual unit. Only trained and authorised personnel should access a traction battery or operate mast controls for battery maintenance.
Access the battery for an approved water check or top-up
For the illustrated truck, the mast is first fully retracted. The card then shows the key being held in the required position, the battery latch being held down, and the mast control being moved to extend the mast so the battery can be accessed.
This sequence must only be used where the exact truck manual and site training confirm it. Do not force a latch, use an improvised tool or continue if the battery does not move as expected.
Keep the work area clear and controlled
- Keep hands, feet and other people clear of moving parts and the battery movement path.
- Use the personal protective equipment and battery-maintenance process required by your workplace.
- Stop and report damage, leakage, heat, unusual smells, corrosion or damaged cables and latches.
- Return the battery to its operating position and complete the applicable checks before using the truck.
